President Obama Wishes Betty White Happy Birthday

Last night, Betty White's 90th Birthday: A Tribute to America's Golden Girl aired on NBC. As part of the telecast, there was a pre-taped segment featuring President Obama. In the segment, the president killed two birds with one stone. In addition to to wishing Betty a happy birthday, he also had a little fun with the birther controversy.

I love Betty White and it was very sad that none of the cast of the Golden Girls are alive except for her and I believe the actor that played her boyfriend, Miles.

I tend to get a bit melancholy watching the re-runs of the show, knowing that they are all gone. It was a great show.

Happy Birthday, Betty!

Leticia: "The Golden Girls" is one of my favorite sitcoms. The show did an excellent job of being funny and tackling serious issues (such as Alzheimer's) without being preachy. Plus, the four stars were the Beatles of sitcom ensembles. They played so well off each other.

I'm sorry to way that Harold Gould (aka "Miles") died in 2010 at the age of 86. :-(

NO!! He died??! Oh no! Betty truly is the last one? My gosh! This is devastating. *tears*

It really was one of the best shows of the 80's, next to Star Trek TNG, of course. My mom and I never missed an episode, ever.

So, no we have the re-runs to enjoy. I used to think that Sophia was my favorite, but I liked them all they were awesome.

90, sharp as a tack, vibrant, funny, and a slap in the face to the anti-elderly bigots out there who hold the old in little esteem.

There's a long list of older celebrities who are still quite active and who appear relatively healthy, like Morgan Freeman, Clint Eastwood, William Shatner, Jack Nicholson, and a few more. But Betty White is the queen.

WTF? Is she on the LaLanne plan or something? Whatever she's doing, we'd all do well to imitate. I'm sure she has her issues. Anyone would at that age. But we'd all also be lucky to make it to 70 still packing that big of a punch.

Here's to 100!

If there's anyone who can be called a female answer to William Shatner, celebrity-wise, it is Betty White.

I remember my mother watching a teevee show with Betty White the star. This is in the '50s or '60s, I can't remember. Anyone else.

She played some sort of impish housewife. That's all I remember. My mother laughed out loud all the time and loved her.

She's amazing.

I just looked it up. The show was called "Life With Elizabeth."

Anyone remember it?

I'll admit to going back as far as the Mary Tyler Moore Show and even then only as reruns. Sue Anne Nivens The Happy Homemaker Rules!

And BTW what the President did was a good bit, does he do his own material or do the taxpayers pay for his comedy writers too?

Yes I went there. Please tip your wait-staff and I'll be here through November...and so will Obama.

Leticia: Although all 4 stars of The Golden Girls brought something, Bea Arthur was my fave. In addition to her well-timed one-liners, she could make me laugh without having to say a word. Some of my favorite moments from the show were when they showed Dorothy's facial reactions to something one of the other 3 said.

Josh: It's amazing the number of over 70 celebs (such as the ones you listed) who have remained active and vibrant.

dmarks: The progression of Shatner's career is interesting because it appears that he gets the joke. What I mean is that he's managed to turn the jokes about his acting style on "Star Trek" into a positive.

Shaw: I've seen "Life with Elizabeth" (there are some episodes on a "Leading Ladies of TV's Golden Age" DVD set that I own). Although I found it to be typical 1950s sitcom fluff, it was still interesting to see a young Betty White in action. By the way, do you remember the short-lived sitcom "The Betty White Show" from the late 70s? I thought that was pretty good.

Curious: I'm surprised the MTM Show hasn't been picked up by TV Land or some other major cable channel in light of Betty's renewed popularity.
