On Tuesday November 6th, one of these four men (Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, and Ron Paul) will go up against President Barack Obama in the general election. Who will it be? I think it's a two-man race between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. Although his impressive showing in the South Carolina primary could be an isolated incident, I'm leaning toward Newt Gingrich getting the nomination. I say this because I think the Republican base wants an angry candidate who they believe can go toe-to-toe with President Obama. They couldn't care less about all the baggage that makes up the personal and political life of Newt "Samsonite" Gingrich. What they want to see is the political destruction of President Obama and they think Newt is the man for the job.

I think it will be Mitt because he's the "safest" choice. Newt is all over the map and I think we will see a lot more additional scandal coming out during his campaign. He is not a good person. Having him elected would destroy this country. He has zero ethics.
Excellent post. It lacked the juvenile un-intellectual snarky tone I find on other left-leaning blogs. No photoshopping of Gingrich into a clown here. Instead, I see the witty "Samsonite" jibe, which it is possible you might have coined. Good one! Too bad more don't take the high road.
As for who is going to win? I think Romney will. He's a lot more "slick". And I think at some point Newt is going to appear "smug" and then Romney will surge ahead. Newt already looks quite smug to me, like he is thinking "I'm real clever and will use any trick I want to get power, money, or the woman I want, no matter what I have to say to get ahead, or who I step on along the way. Because I am smart and can weave quite a web of words along the way. Muahahah!
Santorum is too far back... if this s a horse rase, I don't think he's going to win or place any more.
Ron Paul was never running. He's not a serious candidate. Just a joke candidate. His high showing in early primaries is just an artifact of primary politics. Soon things will settle down so Paul will be real close again with the 3% of the electorate he actually represents.
Remember also, this is the same Ron Paul who describes most Black men as being "semi-criminal or entirely criminal". In his own words.

If the Republicans are looking for that 60's IBM sales man looking type where you expect to get exactly what you ask for, then Mitt's your man. Except of course like most sales men of that time, the uniform that he wears is just a mask to conceal...what? And will that mean that you will really get what expect? Who knows?
Now if the Republicans are looking for someone with fire in their belly then Newt has enough for him, me, you and everyone else in the free speaking world and should please everyone. But with that comes that realization that he's really a loose canon and the "establishment" can't handle that. They don't mind him shooting himself in his own foot, but they look leerily around when he starts pointing the gun their way.
I, believe Santorum could give Obama a run for his money. But if we are speaking of master debaters, it would definitely be Gingrich. The man doesn't hold back his verbal punches and would be a contender against Obama.
I guess we just have to wait and see.
I agree with you Malcolm. The Right wants a mean-spirited fighter to go up against Obama, but it will backfire. Newton will come off as a crazy desperate liar, full of wacky bullshit that will turn off moderates and ALL liberals. He can't win the general with just the "anybody but Obama" wingnuts!
I don't think it will be Mitt cuz he's already on record saying the economy is improving, which has to mean Obama's policies are moving us in the right direction. Do they know how stupid they sound when they say Obama is taking this country in the wrong direction? LOL!
Teresa: When I lean towards Mitt in regards to thinking he'll get the nom, I follow the rationale you outlined. It'll be interesting to see if the GOP electorate chooses safe over toxic this year.

You provided some sound analysis on the four remaining GOP candidates. Although I'm starting to lean towards Mitt again, I still don't think Newt is going to go down quietly.
Curious: Your commentary about the 60s salesman makes me think of Don Draper from "Mad Men". I never thought of it before, but Jon Hamm (the actor who plays Don) resembles Mitt.
As for Newt, the GOP establishment is doing everything in their power to ensure he doesn't get the nomination. They realize what a disaster he would be for their party.
Leticia: I don't think Santorum or Gingrich would stand much of a chance against Obama in the election. I used to also think that Newt didn't hold back until I saw him in the recent FL debate. He had a chance to repeat the "Swiss Bank and Cayman Islands bank accounts" comments he made about Mitt but wouldn't do it. If Newt does get the nomination, the moderators will bring up the "food stamp president" comment to see if he has the guts to say it to President Obama's face.
Sue: The fringe element of the GOP is itching to see Newt face off against President Obama. It's like they are basing it solely on what they feel Newt will do to the president in a debate. I think they'd be in for a rude awakening. Back in 1974, a lot of people thought George Foreman was going to destroy Muhammad Ali. It didn't quite turn out that way.

If Mitt gets the nom, his comments about the economy improving under President Obama will practically be on a continuous loop. It's like the GOP is doing everything in their power to ensure President Obama isn't a one-term president!
